August is a month of celebrating women! It is a month that highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society.
As we wrap up Women’s Month, I caught up with internationally known DJ, Socrates Georgiades aka DJ Sox, and asked him which women have made an impact in his life.
Women in Entertainment
Bailey Schneider – 36
I find her inspirational because of her dedication to her career, her authenticity and professionalism – In fact I find her so inspiring that I married her!
She is known for her continuous work on radio, whereby in 2018 she received her own show on Smile 90.4 FM. She started on radio at 17 years old on the campus radio station at RAU, where she obtained her BA Journalism degree. She continued in her radio career on retail radio, Edgars Music Radio and then moved into commercial radio, with 94.7.
She is also a successful blogger, MC and voice over artist.
DJ Sox’s Personal Life
Dimitra Georgiades, my mother – age unknown.
The hardships and tough childhood she endured as an orphan in Greece during World War 2, and how she overcame them to be the most positive and selfless person around is a true inspiration.
My Mom is a very special woman with so many incredible traits and characteristics. I truly admire her.
Women in Business
Romy Heldsinger – 40
The hardest worker in many fields, she is a born leader who leads by example. She is always the first to get her hands dirty and the last one to expect credit. After working many years in the publishing and digital sectors, Romy wanted to apply her skills to sustainable development and combating socio-economic injustice, basically, profit WITH purpose.
She is now the COO of Forgood (www.forgood.co.za) which is a digital platform for the social sector. Forgood connects people who want to make a difference in South African to Causes (NGO’s) essentially a digital marketplace for active social citizens.
Women Making a Difference
Amal Clooney – 41
She is a high-powered woman, married to one of the most famous actors in the world, yet she stays true to herself and her fight for human rights and justice, not getting caught up in the fakeness of the entertainment industry.
Amal is a Lebanese-British barrister at Doughty Street Chambers, specialising in international law and human rights.
Women in Sports
Caster Semenya – 28
I truly admire her for the way she has carried herself when been attacked from governing bodies as well as her peers, for the sole reason of being born a bit different. Her strength is amazing and incredibly admirable.
Three words describe her best: World Champion Athlete!
About DJ Sox:
Socrates Georgiades, better known as Sox, has been Djing for over 15 years. A born entertainer, he truly believes and lives by his motto of “it’s not what you play, it’s how you play it.”
He is a bundle of energy behind the decks, and is comfortable dropping any genre or track that he feels will rock the crowd at that moment, be it Commercial, Hip Hop, R&B, House, Rock, Disco, or old school classics. His undoubted strong point is having a gift for reading the crowd and he is there to give the dance floor exactly what it needs.
He is the resident DJ at Café Caprice in Camps Bay, Cape Town, and has been for the last 10 years on their signature Sunday nights, which are world-renowned. He has played at all of the big clubs in SA and alongside local and international celebrity DJs.
Highlights include playing exclusive parties for Robert de Niro, Paris Hilton, Jamiroquai and the Black Eyed Peas, to name a few, as well as private parties for Bob Skinstad and Graeme Smith.
