Mihlali Ndamase needs no introduction as one of the most popular influencers on the internet right now. She, like many of her countrymen and women, has been practising safe social-distancing ever since Covid-19 landed in Johannesburg.
On Day 4 of the South African lockdown, we spoke to the 23-year-old influencer about how she is making the most of her time at home with her family:
Moziak Magazine: How are you social distancing during this period?
Mihlali Ndamase: I’ve committed myself to reading a bit more, watching series and movies online, and getting a good amount of work done. It’s going to be a long 21 days so I am trying to space out my content well to avoid reaching a creative block.
MM: Where do you wish you were right now?
MN: In another country, lying next to a beach sipping on cocktails.
MM: Name 3 positive things about the world almost coming to a standstill
MN: 1. It’s an opportunity to realign goals, especially for those who feel demotivated by a negative start to the year.
2. Spend time with loved ones, really listening and speaking to them without having to worry about where you need to be.
3. Take time out of demanding lifetyles to nurse your mental health, and catch up on simple activies that make you happy.
MM: Name 5 things you plan to achieve whilst in “quarantine”
MN: 1. Consistency with uploading YouTube videos; I am really excited about having more time to focus on the creative side of my job. I HATE admin.
2. Read more, I am terrible when it comes to committing to a book and finishing it.
3. Cooking healthy meals more often. I want to rekindle my relationship with my kitchen, I found cooking very therapeutic before my career became super demanding which resulted in me putting my health on the back seat, especially during my work trips but I want to prioritise getting into the habit of meal prepping. I know this will also save me alot of money.
4. Reach 250,000 subscribers on YouTube, I believe this is possible with consistency and putting out quality entertaining content during this period.
5. Feeding my soul and spirit, reading my bible more and having more conversations with God.
MM: What surprising item made your shopping list?
MN: Tinned foods, I am usually not a fan but I am trying to think long-term.
MM: Did you stock up on additional toilet paper?
MN: Yes I did, but with the consideration of others in need. I purchased one extra pack than I usually would.
MM: Have any important plans or activities of yours been cancelled/postponed because of the coronavirus?
A Business trip, I am currently working with Revlon on a very exciting campaign that will unfold in NYC. However, I am not too disappointed because it hasn’t been cancelled, just postponed so I still have something to look forward to once this all settles.
MM: In a year’s time when you look back, what do you think you will be saying about this period?
MN: I am glad we made it!
MM: What advice do you have for people who are struggling with the idea of social distancing?
MN: We can’t be ignorant to the fact that a lot of people are negatively affected by this pandemic, and we should keep them in our prayers but for the sake of our mental health as a country this is an opportunity not only to take time out and realign our goals, feed our minds and souls but to possibly come up with innovative ways to run small businesses. There can always be a positive outcome from a negative situation.
MM: What are you looking forward to the most when the coronavirus pandemic is over?
MN: Traveling home to see family. I will be spending my shutdown alone in Johannesburg, so I know I will be homesick very soon.
