The 8th of March 2020 marked the 35th edition of the UN-founded International Women’s Day: a day in which over 100 countries join in celebration and dialogue around women’s and girl’s issues across the planet. The celebrations were no less profound in Africa this year as many of the continent’s most influential women used the platform to observe the special UN Holiday (fun fact: IWD is a public holiday in over 25 countries!).
The theme for this year’s IWD is #EachForEqual and at a time when women face some of the harshest discrimination on the planet, this motto couldn’t be more welcome. In Africa we have our own battles too: women face the largest barriers to education, safety and other basic human rights and although we are seeing signs of improvement, there’s still plenty of progress to be made.
On this IWD, some key influencers from across the continent took a moment to make their voices heard in the hopes of advancing equality across Africa.
