If you know anything (at all) about wolves, you’ll be familiar with a few basic characteristics. Wolves like to move in packs, in unison, and work as a team to complete a common objective. But every wolf pack will always be led by a dominant alpha who will steer new directions, ensure that the entire pack is fed and most of all – defend the pack from danger.
In Tshego Koke, the youth of South Africa discovered a new leader. One whose fearless authenticity was exactly what they lacked from current leadership. When Tshego dubbed his fans as “the wolf pack” little did he know just how much weight his words would hold.
His fanbase defends him with a type of “pack mentality” not dissimilar to that of wolves. They travel high and low for their leader, and it is his vision which influences them to explore uncharted territory.
As a key member of the ViacomCBS Networks Africa Culture Squad, Tshego Koke knows a thing or two about leading the youth. This experience is critical at a time like now where South Africa’s young citizens are facing unprecendent challenges.
They say that wolves don’t lose sleep over the opinion of sheep. Tshego and his pack share that same sentiment, and it’s this boldness which has led him to the become one of South Africa’s most recognisable broadcasters.
Tshego Koke – Unpacked
How would you describe the youth of SA in 2021?
The youth of 2021 very unorthodox in its ways of pursuing its aspirations .
What are the youth doing well, what could we be doing better?
I feel that we could really do with more opportunities as the youth . There’s a lot of talent out there that could really use help and also talent that’s in-need of platforms that give the youth a chance to prove itself . So we as the youth now need to create those avenues coz we really feel that the government has let us down in that regard
What does it mean to you to be part of the Viacom CBS Culture Squad, knowing thousands of young South Africans get to look up to you?
It’s very symbolic coz it then gives me the opportunity to showcase my talents , have a voice and also most importantly use my voice responsibly in a way that gives birth to more individuals like myself who aspire to be in the entertainment industry
You’ve always been seen as the leader of your own “wolfpack”. How important is it to have leaders among the youth of 2021?
It’s very important to have leaders in the youth of 2021 someone needs to take lead and people need to be lead by people who understand the dynamics of each affair that South Africa is going through . In doing so it then gives an idea of what needs to be done in order for the youth to help fix and create a better future for the next generation of youth
You represent Pretoria, one of the most influential cities in the country. Can you give us examples of how siPitori culture has shaped/influenced SA trends?
It’s helped me understand that no matter where you from and how you speak will always Be what people relate to you with. Music and fashion amongst many other things are things that we love and share ideas on . How you package that is equally important and me being a dude THATS from Pitori helps me in regards to my job as an entertainer.
What makes you proud to be a young person from Pretoria?
It makes me really proud coz I mean we have the likes of bo Focalastic le bo 25K le bo Areece to name a few that are repping PTA and goes to show that even from those townships there’s talent that we can share with the world
What are some of the big moves that young people in your hood/city are making which have gone unnoticed in recent years?
Look I don’t think they’ve gone unnoticed I just feel that everything has it’s time . Like I said , we just need more opportunities. And it’s something that we do a day at a time . So consistency at this point is key for all of us .
If young people could be in positions of power, what do you think we could teach older generations?
They’d teach the old generation to Adapt . Times are changing , how we reach out to the world and masses is different now . But with that said it must be done with precise caution coz we tryna change lives in a positive way
Future generations will read about the youth of 2020/21 who survived and beat the Covid-19 pandemic. What do you want future generations to learn from us?
Survive … and try again tomorrow when you feel that today is too bleak . Basa fela pelo
… life is a marathon .
