Riky Rick’s Cotton Fest was SUPA LIT🔥🔥! It was a really great way to start the year for the culture. I attended with high expectations and was not let down.
Both stages were lit. It was difficult to choose where to be. The stage set up was dope and ALL the artists brought the FIRE with their performances. The cool kids were there. The skrrr boys were doing the most with their attire… Everyone took it upon themselves to make sure that Cotton Fest was one for the books.
Over the past few years, SA Hip Hop has gained momentous traction in the country. From being a niche genre to having Hip Hop acts dictate urban culture as we know it. On the festival side, however, SA Hip Hop has been falling behind. The likes of AKA, Kwesta and Cassper Nyovest have been hosting noteworthy events for the culture but it’s only really been Maftown Heights that has spearheaded the SA Hip Hop “festival” movement for almost 10 years and Cotton Fest comes as a welcomed addition.
Riky Rick’s Cotton Fest is a massive WIN for SA Hip Hop becomes it was positioned to be bigger than just Riky Rick and was about the culture and the coming together of Hip Hop acts for the greater good. I hope Riky Rick is able to pull off Cotton Fest as an annual festival. This type of unity in SA Hip Hop is good for the moral of the industry and will hopefully translate to more collaborations amongst the industry key stakeholders.
