The virtuoso of fashion photography Leonardo V has mastered the art of authentic storytelling through picturesque images. Versatile in his artistry, the creative director uses various aesthetic functions to communicate messages of hope, respect, and gratitude. Inspired by the dystopian film series The Hunger Games, Leonardo’s latest work is titled “Fashion Rebellion”. Set in a post-apocalyptic future in Panem, the film is built around the theme of freedom, elaborately illustrated by Leonardo in the exhibition. Showcasing fashion as non-verbal communication, the creative director uses cinematic photography and fashion symbolism to connect to his gallery.

The lensman unearths “Fashion Rebellion” by capturing brazen fashion statements made through bold colourways, exotic makeup looks, and voguish hairstyles. Fashion muse Efemena adorns a frilled turquoise-blue jacket by fashion designer Giulia Rivellino, coordinated with a black and silver modish top from the fashionista Amelie Poulain. The contrast in Efemena’s hue amalgamation illustrates the audacity to choose individualism over societal norms – rebellion if you will. Efemena’s exotic makeup and voguish hairstyle are reminiscent of Hunger Games character Octavia, played by award-winning actress Bruce Bundy. The eye-catching makeup symbolises boldness and exoticism, which both typify rebellion.

Leonardo V uses bright-coloured backdrops to capture each image in the exhibition, complementing the dazzling colourways adorned by the fashion muses. Daring to be bold, fashion model Miriam adorns an outlandish tart-red puffer jacket courtesy of fashionmonger Giulia Rivellino. The modish jacket comprises rose flower detailing on its back and is paired with blue statement jeans from Stella McCartney. Miriam also adorns a magenta-pink scarf from Zara, matched with a royal-blue rose as a fashion accessory. The flower symbolism can be associated with the beauty of individualism. It can also be associated with the distinct flowers adorned by Hunger Games‘ Effie, played by renowned actress Elizabeth Banks.

Cross-cultural communication is at the heart of this exhibition. The creative director illustrates the nuances of contemporary fashion nestled within Afro-exuberance. Fashion muse Adriana Nunno showcases this phenomenon by fusing a modish dungaree from Italian designer Amelie Poulain with an African threading hairstyle. Unwavering in illustrating the theme of fashion rebellion, Adriana adorns an embroidered azure-blue scarf and embellishes her face with grapefruit-inspired makeup, alluding to the unconventional makeup showcased in The Hunger Games.
From the mise-en-scène to the vogue adorned by the fashion muses, red is a recurring hue in “Fashion Rebellion.” This is fitting since the colour is associated with war and danger, which are both often propelled by rebellion.
Leonardo V’s boundary-pushing photography encourages onlookers to embrace divergent fashion styles. The Hunger Games-inspired mode also emphasises rebellion and a daring attitude to resist the pressure to conform to contemporary fashion boundaries.
