Today, many of us are familiar with what a remix is. It’s a re-recorded version of an existing song and over the years we have been graced by many remixes that have gone on to eclipse their original tracks.
Remixes were the order of the day across Africa on a New Music Friday that was filled with plenty of surprises. Starting in…
South Africa
If you’ve never experienced acts of redemption, then you should have been on the timeline this morning where 2019’s villain, Burna Boy, became 2020’s prodigal son as he starred on a remix of Master KG’s smash hit Jerusalema.
Burna Boy featured alongside Nomcebo on an unexpected remix of the 2019 smash hit and his verse lived up to the hype too. Switching between Zulu, Pidgin and Yoruba, all of 2019’s tension (after he vowed to never visit South Africa following a misinterpretation of the xenophobic violence) was forgotten as an almost heavenly Oluwa Burna admitted to his own imperfections on a strong verse.
Nigeria
It was all about remixes across Africa as Mayorkun stole the headlines in Nigeria following his feature on Bad Boy Timz’ MJ remix.
The dance anthem that has found Bad Boy Timz his latest lease of success in his short career has not lived out its life span in part because of COVID-19 but also because it was not released so long ago. As Mayorkun slaps on the kind of skillfully put together verse that has made him one of Afropop’s brightest stars, you are guaranteed to enjoy this just as much as you did the original.
