The heart of the Halls #BreatheForIt Campaign is undoubtedly the Kitchener’s Carvery Bar nestled in South Africa’s creative square: Braamfontein. Under the mentorship of acclaimed illustrator and street artist Karabo Poppy, today’s mentee, Anathi Hadebe, shared in the creative reimagining of the vibrant hotspot, which received mural treatment from his contemporaries Levy Pooe and Boemo Diale.
A Wits alumnus, Anathi obtained his BA degree in Fine Arts there, majoring in Photography, Painting, Sculpture, and Animation. In addition to being an experienced 3D animator thanks to working at Media Sea, he has also completed many murals and projects, including an undertaking for Soul House.
3D animation has always been fascinating to Anathi, particularly the part of creation; in fact, his love for 2D animation fanned the flames burning for 3D animation. He also has a penchant for painting, describing it as “meditation” and a form of escapism from the world’s burdens. A flexible artist, illustrations are second nature to him, whether done manually or digitally.
A man of few words, Anathi took to Instagram to share his work and behind-the-scenes footage of the process, inspiring the next generation of illustrators and artists with his inimitable #UngapheliUmoya flair.
Karabo Poppy has done her part in showing her mentees what is possible and providing them with the opportunities to become businesses in their own right. It is now in their hands to carry on tradition and adorn bland walls, turning them into unique canvases that tell a story.
