On a random weekday whilst scrolling through my social media I pause on a UK comedian. What makes this special was how in the background of his video I could make out the vivid beats of Africa’s very own Burna Boy playing. It shows testament as to how far the artist has come.
His new album OUTSIDE follows the trend of melodic afro beats in KONI BAJE but unlike others his voice is more suited to this type of genre as you find yourself bumping along to each track. Whether it be the upbeat tracks of YE, or the slowed down SEKKLE DOWN, you can’t help but be drawn in as you are taken on a journey.
Although featuring international artists, his inspiration is well rooted in Africa and this comes across through songs like WHERE I’M FROM and STREETS OF AFRICA. I proudly repeat the entire album for the next few days until finding many of my favourite tracks.
In an era where the world is becoming more accessible through technology, I only expect the album to do well as the rest of the world shows more interest in such artists staying true to our continent’s unique sounds and messages.
OUTSIDE showcases a variety of music which should appeal to folks of all walks life, and intrigue those with some form of interest in listening to something a little different.
I give OUTSIDE a well-deserved 4/5 *Plays GIDDEM*
