The South African Fashion Week (SAFW) has finally arrived! The highly anticipated fashion extravaganza started with elegant fashion fireworks on Tuesday, 26 April – just a few days before the actual exhibition. Held at Fireroom restaurant in Midrand, the soreè was a celebration of the internationally renowned fashion show’s jubilee, which will be held in the presence of a live audience for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic. South Africa’s most beloved fashionistas—from celebrities and influencers to designers and creators—all came out in droves to enjoy the glamorous event in their locally produced clothes.
Hosted by Cruz Vintage Black Vodka for the eighth consecutive year, the evening offered an abundance of fashion, music, art, and luxury, kicking off the three-day fashion week. With the launch hosted by Cruz, it is no surprise that “Fela in Versace” hit-maker AKA was the man of the moment due to his long-standing partnership with the legendary brand.
Supa Mega looked the part and was resplendent in a dandelion-yellow suit from House of Ole (not Versace), which is a locally-owned fashion brand founded by astounding fashion designer Ole Ledimo.
Her Majesty, the Queen, DJ Zinhle, brought a feminine touch to the soreè as she donned a magenta-pink set from local luxury fashion brand Ezokhetho by the talented Nompumelelo Dhlamini.
Multi-award-winning TV host Kim Jayde brought a casual chic vibe to the event by rocking a snake print, cut-out number from Neo Serati. Like a true streetwear fashionista, she matched the stylish dress with a classic pair of Jordans.
Rapper Nadia Nakai resembled a Disney princess as she made an entrance in a breathtaking cadmium-green gown from Scalo by local fashion designer Sello Modupe.
Media personality K Naomi exuded class in a cream-white Judith Atelier garment with royal blue floral patterning. Being the fashionista she is, K Naomi added a glitzy silver purse to the mix.
Musician and TV personality Anele Zondo, popularly known as Ney The Bae, was nothing short of showstopping. Ney graced the party in an eccentric sheer black lace-infused outfit from futuristic fashion brand Sixx6, proving that fashion has no boundaries. Therefore, exoticism is permitted.
The SAFW’s Spring/Summer 2022 Collections will be showcased from Thursday until Saturday. Floyd Avenue, Ezokhetho, Loxion Kulca, Amanda Laird Cherry, Mantsho, MUNKUS, and Ephymol are all in line to wow the crowd with their work at the acclaimed exhibition.
