In the pantheon of South Africa’s vibrant entertainment and urban culture scene, few have come to play as definitive a role in driving it forward as Raphael Benza. His track record – spanning over 17 years operating at the top tier of showbiz – is the model of consistency in an industry that has such a rapid turnover rate. Since founding the boutique full-service music entertainment agency, Vth Season, Benza has gone on to assemble a formidable stable of artists and other talent.

1. Describe entrepreneurship in 5 words
Determination, frustration, exhilarating, painful and joy.
2. What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
Not what, who… My mother. From an early age she was steadfast on creating opportunities for herself and our family. She was innovative, groundbreaking, and hardworking when we were growing up. Even when she eventually took employment, she never stopped having a business on the side.
3. What’s the biggest misconception people have about the work you do?
That it’s always a good time and it’s for outgoing extrovert people only.
4. Hardest lesson you’ve learnt on your journey thus far?
Your principles and morals are not shared with others.
5. Best memory as an entrepreneur?
Every innovation and unprecedented activities which other people copied.
6. How are you innovating in your business?
Innovation is as constant as the waves in ocean. Right now, we are on a mission to find and develop at least 25 qualified and professional Artist Managers in South Africa in anticipation for the biggest Boom in the African Music landscape…

8. What are you reading?
Besides Moziak?… Esquire article on Idris Alba and You are loved (Kid’s book – Read this at least 3 x a week).
9. The best business advice you have ever received?
My dear friend once said… After I give you advice, don’t ask me to help implement the business/idea unless you have presented me with a business plan.
10. What advice can you give to people who are new to business/entrepreneurship?
Get used to being selfless with your time and learn when to pull out, pivot and start again.
