With Tumi Powerhouse her name does the talking before she even opens her mouth. Her work backs it up too. With a strong background in communications, marketing and PR, it is not by chance that her personal brand as a makeup artist and beauty content creator places her amongst the best of the best.
She is responsible for the makeup direction of the Bridgerton Affair this weekend in celebration of the much-anticipated hit Netflix series’ season 2 premiere on 25 March. The Royal Soiree hosted by Zozibini Tunzi as Her Majesty Queen is promised to be the event of the season.
Tumi Powerhouse fills us in on some beauty tips and how to get Bridgerton ready.
You have made a name for yourself as a makeup artist and a beauty influencer, what is it about the beauty industry that attracted you to pursue it as a career?
I grew up in a family of women and that in itself tells how I was intrigued about how they interpreted beauty. From my mom to my aunts and sisters – I took a page from their books of beauty and that influenced my interest in beauty. I then grew up and the beauty bug never left and that was sign enough that I needed to be in this fraternity.
Tumi, it’s in your name, you’re a powerhouse indeed. How do you balance staying on top of all your business ventures?
The truth is I’m not always on top of it. I consistently need help from my best friend, who sometimes and only when he likes, dabbles as my stunt double and my manager, Obey Muchupisi. The more the hands, the more I’m able to successfully attain what I need to attain.
You are responsible for the makeup direction for the Bridgerton soiree. Congratulations! Which character from season 1 did you enjoy the most?
I absolutely love the Queen. She is fierce, she’s a diva and she just gets it!
Fashion-wise, what do you expect to see at the event?
A representation of African royalty. I can’t wait to see how everyone interprets Bridgerton with an African eye!
The ladies of Bridgerton are known for their subdued makeup, will this be the direction you’re taking for the event?
Not entirely. The African royalty always has to have an extra pizzazz with a pop of colour. So subtle beauty with a pop!
What makeup tips can you give us so we too can get Bridgerton ready?
Skin! We need some glow and glisten. We are not caking up but enhancing.
Eyes! Give us a little pop, a little colour, some gold. A little deepness won’t kill as well.
What is the one makeup item you just cannot live without?
My setting powder! I overuse it!
You’ve already started the year off on a great note, clearly, what else can we expect to see from you this year?
